I. About XIEG

Founded in 1961, the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) is a beacon of scientific and technological advancement in Xinjiang. Focusing on major scientific and technological challenges, XIEG conducts cutting-edge research on ecology, environment, and resources in arid regions, supporting the Silk Road Economic Belt Initiative and the overall goal of social stability and long-term security in Xinjiang.

XIEG specializes in ecological and environmental monitoring and assessment, mineral exploration and environmental governance, sustainable use of biological resources in arid regions, income enhancement for farmers and herds, and regional green development, in Xinjiang and Central Asia.

XIEG ranks first in the world in publishing scientific research on arid land water resources and oases, and has been ranked in the top 1% of the Essential Science Indicators in five disciplines, earth science, environment/ecology, plant and animal science, agricultural science, and engineering science. XIEG has received over 300 awards at various levels, including two UN Environment Programme awards and nearly 40 national awards.

XIEG has established various research platforms, including laboratories, research centers, as well as various field stations at home and abroad.

In addition, XIEG has ten postgraduate majors, including physical geography, human geography, environmental science, botany, ecology, soil and water conservation and desertification control, cartography and geographical information systems, earth exploration and information technology, resources and environment, and biology and medicine.

XIEG also offers six Ph.D. programs covering physical geography, human geography, botany, ecology, cartography and geographic information systems (GIS), earth exploration and information technology, and has four postdoctoral stations for research in geography, ecology, biology, and geological resources and geological engineering.

II. Research Fields

Arid land geography, arid land ecology, arid land hydrology and water resources, desertification control and ecological restoration, oasis ecology and agriculture, arid land biodiversity conservation, mineral resources and big data, remote sensing and GIS, as well as regional planning and sustainable development.

III. Positions and Eligibility

1. Academic Leaders: Professor, Senior Engineer

(1) Applicants should hold a Ph.D. degree and be younger than 50 years old. They should serve as professors or hold equivalent positions in prestigious research institutions, universities, R&D department in large enterprises, both domestically and internationally.

(2) Applicants should demonstrate experience in leading and managing major research projects, coupled with research achievements acknowledged by peers.

(3) Applicants should have innovative ideas for the development of the discipline and scientific research, along with exceptional ability to lead a team in solving problems.

2. Researchers: Professor, Associate Professor; Senior Engineer, Engineer.

(1) Applicants should hold a Ph.D. degree and be under 40 years old. They should also have more than three consecutive years of work experience or at least one post-doctoral experience in prestigious research institutions, universities, R&D department of large enterprises in China and abroad after obtaining the Ph.D. degree. Exceptions may be considered for individuals who have obtained a Ph.D. degree overseas and have demonstrated exceptional performance.

(2) Applicants should have experience in leading research projects (with possible relaxation of this requirement for overseas returnees) and have made scientific or technological accomplishments recognized by peers.

V. Talent Policy

Those who are eligible for talent projects at the national, local and CAS levels will be assisted by XIEG in the application process. Additionally, they will receive support from XIEG, including research start-up funds, settling-in allowances, and assistance in building a research team.

Relevant policy support for talent:

1. Those who are granted with the national-level or CAS-level talent programs (long-term or outstanding): will be appointed as professor and supervisor for Ph.D. students. They will receive research start-up funds ranging from RMB 6 million to RMB 16 million, and settling-in allowances ranging from RMB 1 million to RMB 2 million;

2. Those who are awarded with the national-level or CAS-level talent programs (youth category): will be appointed as associate professor and supervisor for master students. They will receive research start-up funds ranging from RMB 2 million to RMB 8 million, and settlement allowances ranging from RMB 0.5 million to RMB 1 million;
